Orlistat (brand name Xenical) can be used in combination with a calorie-controlled diet and exercise to help people lose weight.

Orlistat is not an appetite suppressant, it works in your stomach and prevents your body absorbing some of the fat that you consume in food. It prevents certain enzymes called “lypases” from breaking down the fat you consume and therefore preventing it from being absorbed, the fat then passes out of your body undigested and reduces the number of calories that your body absorbs, helping you lose weight.

Orlistat can be taken up to three times per day with breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is advisable that you take a daily multivitamin supplement (containing vitamins A, D, E and K) as orlistat can prevent the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
